By Brothers Grimm / retold: Jennifer Alvara

After a father claims to the king that his daughter can make gold from straw, a girl does so, but only with the help of a funny little man. To save herself from death, she promises her firstborn child to this strange man. A year later, he comes to collect but says he will not take the infant if the girl can guess his name. A spy helps her out and she makes the right guess: Rumplestiltskin! The story is a German fairytale, made popular by the Brothers Grimm in 1812.
