The Kon-Tiki Expedition

By Oyvind Haaland

In 1947 a handmade raft, Kon-Tiki, recreated the impossible journey made by the ancestors of Polynesian Island residents. Under the command of Norwegian Thor Heyerdahl, the crew sailed west for more than 100 days from Peru across thousands of miles of Pacific Ocean, with no other boats in sight. The historic voyage attracted worldwide attention, proving that Polynesians may have come from South America.
