The Spear and the Shield

A merchant on an Asian trade route regularly exaggerated the quality of his goods. The merchant tried to sell a young warrior a weapon. He praised a spear as the sharpest ever made, capable of piercing any shield. He held up a shield, claiming it could not be pierced by any spear. Can both claims possibly be true?
