The rise of the audiobook: Why listening to audiobooks is so popular

20 November 2019

Welcome to the world of audiobooks, where stories are brought to life by amazing voices and sounds. This ever-popular way of consuming literature has become one of the hottest bookish trends of recent years and it’s here to stay for the long haul.

But why has there been such a boom in audiobooks lately? It seems everyone knows someone who is listening to a great bestseller or recommending a must-listen audiobook. One answer: time. For grown-up bookworms, audiobooks are a lifesaver. They allow us to pursue our love of reading while juggling a million other priorities such as commuting, exercising or driving to pick up the kids from school. And the benefits of listening to audiobooks doesn’t stop there, with many of us choosing to put down our phones and listen to a story in order to channel some much-needed mindfulness.

Better yet, audiobooks offer children who struggle with reading access to literature. Little ones who love the written word may also enjoy listening to stories as a way to relax and unwind after a long day at school or as a peaceful activity before bedtime.

One thing we know for sure is that audiobooks are great to listen to with other people. Parents and kids can sit down and ‘switch off’ with a good story for company and it counts as great parent-child quality time too.
